Honey Smacks Redesign

Honey Smacks is a lesser known cereal brand that produces honey flavored, wheat cereal. While the cereal may be good, the packaging is average. I wanted to redesign the packaging to standout on the shelves and play into the honey flavor.

The original package for Honey Smacks had a few flaws for me:

  • They used a frog mascot for a honey based cereal

  • The use of red and orange as the background felt basic and did not contrast well with the typography

  • They wasted an effective typographic logo with shoddy graphics and hierarchy around it

Sketches

I made 8 different sketches for the new cereal box design. I wanted to vary the content in each sketch, so I made some sketches with typography as the focal point, some with a character, some with an image, etc.

I ended up settling with sketch 7 to move forward with to the digital design. Although some of the other options intrigued me, I found the initial typography of the package to be effective (“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”). My focal point moving forward was to put my own twist on the original typographic logo and surround it with new, more cohesive graphics.

Through my research, I also found out that practically every major cereal has a male mascot. This was astounding to me! So, in order to keep a neutral design, I got rid of the mascot all together.
